About Root Canals
Each tooth contains one to four very small passageways that extend from the end of your tooth’s root to the top of the tooth. These are called root canals. If your root canal is infected, your entire tooth can become damaged and you may end up suffering from sensitivity, pain, and the development of pus (which can cause an abscess). With the use of root canal therapy, we can remove the diseased tissue and restore the rest of your tooth. This helps to stop the infection from spreading.
In a root canal, the dentist cleans and disinfects the tooth chamber, removes the infected tissue, and then fills the canals with elastic material, as well as with infection-fighting medication. An inlay, onlay, or crown is then used to seal the root canal. If your root canal is not effective in preserving your tooth, you may need to consider having a dental implant procedure performed.
